All the recipes shown here are well tried and tested, you may have no
qualms about using any of them. They are all 23 litres (5 gallons) and assume a mash effiency of 78%. The first
recipe is the one which is used on my all grain brewing pages.

To make a Pilsner style Lager, simply replace the Lager Malt with Pilsner Malt and the British
Caramalt with Carapils malt. Use the same amount as shown in the recipe.
How to calculate the amount of bittering hops required
You will have noticed that apart from the first recipe, I have not stated the amount of hops
to be added at the start of the boil, this is because the amount can vary depending on the Alpha Acid content of the hops.
Fortunately there is a simple calculation you can use to determine the amount required, I will show how I calculated the first
brew as an example, this calculation assumes a 20% hop utilisation.
I intend to make this first brew at 42 bittering units. The first calculation needed
is to multiply the bittering units required by the size of the brew in litres; therefore 42 multiply by 23 = 966.
The next calculation needed is to multiply the Alpha Acid content of the hops by 2, fortunately
these days the Alpha Acid content on packs of hops is written on the packs. The Target hops used had a Alpha Acid content
of 11%, therefore the calculation required is 11 multiply by 2 = 22.
The final calculation is to divide the first calculation by the second calculation, 966 divide
by 22 = 43.909, this figure is the amount of hops required and to round it off I used 44 grams of hops in this brew.
